The Virtuous Mob is an ongoing social-media experiment dedicated to channeling the power of the crowd into spontaneous episodes of mass beneficence.
Sometimes philanthropy, sometimes volunteerism, sometimes perhaps political action — all in the service of service. The first Virtuous Mob will mob up November 18, 2009 to generate small donations to a non-profit charitable foundation. Based on the lessons of that exercise, the Mob will be unleashed again and again to wreak virtue on individuals, communities, organizations around the world.
The project is based on the concept of “Listenomics,” as espoused in my book The Chaos Scenario. The book postulates that in the rubble of mass media, marketers, governments, charities, churches and all institutions that historically have dictated from the top down must adapt to a digital world of supreme interconnectivity, in which the power is now invested in the crowd.
